Whisper of God
Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

Observation
Paul uses Abraham to show that we are justified by faith and not as a result of what we do as works of righteousness before God. Righteousness was credited to Abraham because he believed God and not because he was circumcised.
In chapter 2 Paul established that the "work" of circumcision means nothing outwardly unless it is accompanied by a circumcision of the heart. The Holy Spirit transforms our hearts by faith and not as a result of our works.
Abraham believed God - period. He knew that the promise God gave for a son was humanly impossible; he was nearly 100 years old and Sarah's womb at 90 was still barren and dead. But because He believed God the promised son Isaac was born. And righteousness was credited to Abraham not because of what he had done, but only because he chose to believe God.
Real Life Application
I cannot earn salvation or righteousness by what I do, or even what I don't do trying to obey God. It is all by faith.
Day's Prayer
Lord I confess that from time to time I am guilty of trying to do the right things in my own strength. In those times I fall flat on my face. I fail you not because I don't love you, but because somewhere in the back of my head I believe the lie that I have to earn your favor.
Forgive me for trying to earn your gift of salvation and righteousness by the works I try to do. Holy Spirit empower me with simple childlike faith to just believe. By faith you make me righteous, and by faith you will cause the righteousness of Jesus to be lived in me.
Wow God! You are so good to me; thank you for clothing me in righteousness I could never buy for myself.

Focus

ObservationThe psalmists confidence is in God and God alone. He knows that all who trust in the things of this world will perish. His desire is to be near the Lord who is his refuge.
Is my confidence in the Lord in this same way? Or do I make the mistake of looking to people or the things of this world?
Real Life ApplicationPeople will let me down; only God will never fail. I must trust Him.
Day's PrayerLord I confess that I fall short of Asaph's prayer. It is one thing for me to know that you are trustworthy and it is another to make you my singular hearts desire. Holy Spirit help me to let go of the things of this world that will end the end perish. Forgive me for looking to man. Give me an undivided heart to trust in you alone. O God you are my refuge.

Multiplying God
Whisper of God
Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.
2 Corinthians 9:13 NIV
Observation
Paul is encouraging the church at Corinth to follow through with the commitment they made to help those in Jerusalem in need. He reminds them of their promise to give and their eagerness to do so. He also tells them of his boasting about their generosity which in turn moved others to give.
In the year that has gone by, Paul reminds them that they will reap a harvest in proportion to what is sown. In other words the greater their gift the greater the harvest they will receive.
God's multiplication is not limited to only finances. The obedience of their giving will also overflow with praise and thanksgiving from everyone else. The gift they give will see an immediate harvest in the lives of others within the church at Corinth, in their community and beyond.
Real Life Application
I am thankful for God's provision and how He enables me to give (with the thankful support of Susie-an immediate harvest). Together we can give even more as we trust God to bring an even great harvest through our obedience.
Day's Prayer
Lord, You are a multiplying God! You don't want to just add to our account - You want it to multiply. Help me to see the ways you grow an abundant harvest beyond my imagination. Lord, give me eyes to see obedience praise and thanksgiving in the lives of others as a direct result of my giving. All I have is yours, and with your help I will give cheerfully knowing the harvest is multiplied!

This is a Test . . .
Whisper of God
For you, O God, have tested us;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
Psalm 66:10 ESV
Observation
The psalmist encourages us to give praise to God for all that the Lord has done on our behalf. God has done awesome things! And yet in the midst of all God has done we are also reminded that God has tested us.
This is no ordinary test! It is like the refining of silver put to the fire. The silversmith knows the sliver is pure when his reflection can be seen. God tests us to prove us - to see His reflection in our day to day lives.
I for one still have a long way to go until I am like Jesus in every way. Yet today I can think of three way God will test me:
(1) INTEGRITY TEST - God wants to prove my character to be a man without compromise - to be whole and unbroken.
(2) FAITHFULNESS TEST - God wants to prove that I will not waiver in my faith, but continue to trust Him in all things.
(3) FINANCIAL TEST - God wants to prove that I will love Him and not the god of money; no one can serve two masters.
With God's help I am up to the test.
Real Life Application
In the heat of the test I need to look for God's image to be seen in. If Jesus can be seen in me then and only then have I passed the test!
Day's Prayer
Lord help me to not be surprised by the tests that come into my life. I don't want to be guilty like a student who has not studied of saying, "What test?" even though the test may be hard help me to remember it is not given to overwhelm or destroy me. Yes, yes
Whisper of God
Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.
2 Corinthians 1:24
Observation
I'm feeling a little better this morning. I'm not the only pastor to have broken a promise or had to deal with conflict in the church.
Paul visited Corinth on the way to Macedonia and intended to visit them again on his way back to Judea. Something change his plans so that the Corinthians accused him of saying, "yes" and "no." This conflict caused Paul's response about the message of Christ. It is always, "yes." As a result he writes one of my favorite verses about the promises of God bing "yes" in Christ Jesus. Here is an example of what Paul told the Romans that "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him."
We are not told here what the difficulties were in Corinth. Paul's first letter to this church shows us that Corinth is far from perfect and this letter will remove any doubt we might have about finding the perfect church.
Paul calls God as witness that by not coming to Corinth the church was spared. Paul would have told them strongly what they needed to hear. But Paul concludes with this statement. It is not to lord or rule over the Corinthians. Rather it is to work with them for joy as together they stand firm in faith.
Real Life Application
I need to let God renew my love for the church so they can receive from me with joy and the strengthening of their faith.
Day's Prayer
Lord, I confess that my strength of doing things on my own is a weakness to sometimes engage or confront people when needed. Help me first to build loving relationships involving others in the ministry at the church. Only then can I have the credibility to speak truth into their lives when needed. Holy Spirit keep me humble so that like Paul I never give in to the temptation to "lord over" the church. You are the Lord and I am a servant to wash the feet of Your Bride. Forgive me for letting my love or commitment for the church to be "yes" and "no." Increase my love for the church so that like You the "yes" of unwavering commitment is seen and Your promises are in turn fulfilled.

Don't Act In Haste
Whisper of God
The priest replied, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.”
David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
Observation
When Jonathan confirmed that his father King Saul intended to kill David, David was forced to flee for his life. David knew that Saul would still try to hunt him down, but because he left in such haste he was unprepared to defend himself. Yet God provided a weapon unlike any other. The sword of Goliath which David had used to behead the giant after striking him with a stone was in the possession of the priest at Nob.
As David's story continues to unfold he is engaged in many battles. Most likely this sword was used with skill by David. Yet on those occasions when Saul sought out David and the Lord gave David the opportunity to take Saul's life, David refused to strike down the Lord's anointed. Even though God provided David with a sword, a sword which had previously been one of his enemies, David did not use this weapon against the one enemy that had vowed to take his life.
In everything David trusted God and refused to take even the sword God provided into his own hands.
Real Life Application
God has promised to provide for me, to even give that which belonged to the wicked to His righteous one's. I must like David continue to trust God and not be quick to use my own wisdom and waste what God provides as I think is best.
Day's Prayer
Lord Jesus I give you thanks for the ways You have provided for me and my family. I confess that sometimes I am too quick to act and may waste what you have provided. Forgive me when I act in haste even when it is obvious that You have provided. Help me to like David trust you with the outcome in everything and not be in a hurry to do things myself.

Righteous Indignation
Whisper of God
When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger.
1 Samuel 11:6
Observation
Some of the Jews living in Jabesh Gilead were being oppressed by the Ammonites. They requested a treaty but were told that peace would be granted only on one condition. The right eye of every man would have to be gouged out to humiliate all of Israel.
It is worth noting that this effectively makes such a man a blind warrior. If he is right handed he would hold a shield in his left hand and fight with the javelin or spear in his right. The shield would cover his left eye leaving him defenseless against an attack.
Rather than accept the request they asked for time to send word through out Israel to see if anyone would come to their aid. If no one responded then the Ammonites could do as they pleased with them.
When Saul heard these words he did not just become angry. The Spirit of God came upon him causing him to burn with anger, or as we might say today to have a righteous indignation. Saul's anger motivated him to bring all the men from through out Israel to come to the aid of their brothers in Jabesh Gilead. As a result a great victory was won and the kingship was established firmly for Saul.
Real Life Application
What will make me angry to be moved upon by God to act and defend those being per sued not by a physical enemy but by principalities and powers that are not flesh and blood? I need to commit time to pray for revival that they eyes of the spiritually blind will be opened to the light of the gospel.
Day's Prayer
Lord Jesus forgive me for my apathy. Like your disciples in the garden I fail to wait in prayer for even an hour. My spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Strengthen me by Your Spirit. Give me an anger that motivates me to action to stand against the deception of the enemy that people will be set free from Satan's oppression. Help me answer Your call to battle, Your call to prayer.

Out of My Mind
Whisper of God
And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
1 Samuel 8:7 NIV
Observation
Then nation of Israel rejected Samuel's sons and asked for a king to rule over them like other nations. God told Samuel that this was not a personal rejection of Samuel and his family, but instead was the result of the people's continual rejection of God as their Lord and Master.
In 1 Corinthians 2:12 Paul writes -
“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.
It is amazing that God has given us understanding that is beyond human comprehension or ability. God will make known to us His mind, His thoughts because through the Spirit we have the mind of Christ. Yet even so we are so much like the people of Israel. We try to tell God what we think is best, what God should or should not do. As Israel asked for a king we will exalt ourselves above God thinking that we know what what we cannot know apart from God. Dare we so reject God?
Real Life Application
I must be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking I know what is best; I have been given the mind of Christ but must wholeheartedly depend upon the Lord and not human wisdom.
Day's Prayer
Lord Jesus I thank you for the wisdom You give by Your Holy Spirit. Forgive me when I confuse Your wisdom with mine. Forgive me for being impulsive and too quick to act when I should wait for You to make known to me what is really on Your mind and the direction I should follow. Give me patience to wait and know the mind of Christ.

First or Last?
Whisper of God
“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
Matthew 20:16 NIV
Observation
Jesus makes this statement following the parable of the landowner who hires workers throughout the day, yet when the work is done they are all paid the same. Those who worked only an hour received the same as those who worked a full day. What a deal! Sign me up for an hours work too.
I've read this parable many times and this verse many times. I think I might have it all wrong. I have often let others go ahead of me. I must confess that in my pride I've thought that now I am in a position to receive even more of a reward from God because I was willing to be last. Oh goody I get to move to the front of the line in heaven right? Umm, I don't think so.
Don't get me wrong I don't think there is anything bad about being kind and letting others go ahead of you, but I better not do it thinking that somehow I will increase my reward.
Instead I think what God really wants is to be content with what He gives to me - now and in eternity. If God's generosity seems unfair to me then the problem is not with God. I need to examine my heart and week out the desire to be first or have the most. All I have is from God - period. That's the same for all of us, so let's stop comparing and just be content.
Real Life Application
As a pastor I'm going to be content to let God put me in line and not worry about other ministers who might be ahead of me or get more in attendance, recognition or even finances. I'm thankful to have just been chosen.
Day's Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess my pride and desire to be first. Yes even in my pride I've at times taken the back seat thinking that it moved me ahead of others in your sight. Help me to be content with what you give to me, and even more empower me to rejoice in your generosity when others are put ahead of me even if in the thinking of the world it does not seem fair. I'm not asking you to be fair. I just thank You for including me in the line!

Who Amazes You?

“When the princes in Israel take the lead,
when the people willingly offer themselves—
praise the LORD!
Judges 5:2 NIV
Observation
This is the beginning of Deborah's song. She led Israel as a one of the judges. When the people cried out because of the oppression of their enemies she instructed Barak to take 10,000 men to go out against them. He did so with the promise that she would go with them (but that's another part of the story).
After the victory Deborah sings this song of praise to the Lord. She in essence says when the princes or fighting men of Israel advance - when they offer themselves to take their stand against the enemy - THEN PRAISE THE LORD!
Barak went to battle but was intimidated. His confidence was not so much in God but Deborah. Her presence encouraged him to go to battle, but what help could she give? Deborah knew that the victory was possible only with the help of the Lord. Deborah sang like David: "Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me . . . . Say to me, 'I am your salvation.'"
Real Life Application
My confidence must be in God who amazes me for only He will strengthen me to stand strong against those who would oppose me.
Day's Prayer

Seize the Day
Whisper of God -
The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,the Son of God.
Mark 1:1 NIV
Observation -
Mark begins by looking back. Hundreds of years earlier the prophet Isaiah spoke of what would happen. A messenger would be sent to prepare the way ahead of God's Anointed One - the Messiah.
Suddenly John the Baptist appears in the wilderness preaching a message of repentance because the Kingdom of God was near. People were baptized in the Jordan. Observation -
Mark begins by looking back. Hundreds of years earlier the prophet Isaiah spoke of what would happen. A messenger would be sent to prepare the way ahead of God's Anointed One - the Messiah.
Suddenly John the Baptist appears in the wilderness preaching a message of repentance because the Kingdom of God was near. People were baptized in the Jordan. My Defense
Whisper of God -
"Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense.”
(Acts 22:1 NIV)
Observation -
Paul has come to Jerusalem, and as expected the Jews there opposed him. He was arrested, falsely accused, beaten and would have been killed if the Roman guard had not intervened. The city was in an uproar rioting because of Paul.
In the midst of this Paul has the opportunity to give his defense. An angry crowd listens as he tells how Christ apprehended him on his way to Damascus.
Real Life Application -
I fit in with the world too much because the only people who get mad at me are other Christians; is this good?
Day's Prayer -
Lord Jesus, above all else I want to please You in how I live my life. I'm not looking for a fight, but I do want a watching world to know that I am different. And I don't just want to be a people pleaser either, so give me wisdom to follow You even when some people just don't understand. Contagious
Whisper of God -
“‘You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean, so they will not die in their uncleanness for defiling my dwelling place,[b] which is among them.’”
(Leviticus 15:31 NIV)
Observation -
Throughout the book of Leviticus God establishes laws which we give little or no thought to. Some of this is because the sacrificial requirements to be cleansed of sin in God's sight no longer apply. Jesus has been offered one and for all as the final sacrifice for sin. We are forgiven because His blood was poured out for us at the cross.
Yet there is still much we can learn that does apply to how we live our lives today. For instance we may read over passages like Leviticus 15 and think little more than God protecting His people from disease. All these rules about being made unclean if you touch someone with a bodily discharge, or anything they may have touched, or the bed they have slept on don't seem that important to me.
But wait I think there is more too it than what we see at first glance. It isn't just about bodily fluids or a woman's monthly period. I mean how am I supposed to know if a man had a bodily discharge and just got up from the chair I'm now sitting in?
Instead I believe God wants us to see just how contagious sin can be. Sin can hide in unseen places in our lives. No one else may know what we have done. But if we don't deal with even the hidden sin in our lives it will be like a contagious disease that spreads out infecting everyone I come in contact with.
Real Life Application -
Only I can respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit to repent of my sin; may I not hesitate, but come clean quickly so I am not contagious.
Day's Prayer -
Lord I don't want to be contagious with sin. I don't want to brush aside what others might think is no big deal. Regardless of what others may think sin is like a virus that will not only affect me, but it will seek to infect those I love. Give me ears to hear and a heart that is quick to respond to your voice. Keep me Lord from evil; I don't want to be contagious.

Comfort Zones
Whisper of God -
Every day he went out on the streets and talked with anyone who happened along.

Observation -
Paul found himself in Athens, the intellectual center of the world. He was angered by what he saw - temples, shrines, idols and the pagan worship that went along with it. But Paul did not vent his anger at the people of Athens. Instead he saw them for as they really were - lost and unaware of God's love. The Holy Spirit compelled him to begin to talk with the people of the city. He did not ignore them or ridicule them. Instead he got to know them so in turn he could introduce them to Jesus. In time Paul had the opportunity to share publicly and made reference to the shrine for the unknown god. That which was worshipped as unknown, Paul now made known. And it all started with conversations along the street.
Real Life Application -
I cannot hide myself in an office or my introverted self, but need to allow the Holy Spirit to help me get beyond the walls that confine me to talk with people in my ordinary day to day life.
Day's Prayer -
Lord you made me as I am. You know I'm comfortable to spend time alone. But you have also filled me with your Holy Spirit to empower me, to help me break out of my comfort zone and interact with people you love. Help me to see people as you see them. Fearless
Whisper of God -
Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.
(Acts 14:19 NIV)
Observation -
Paul and Barnabas had preached in Iconium but the city was divided. Some believed (both Jew and Greek) but there were some among the Jews that began to stir up trouble. Things became so heated that the two missionaries left the city before they were stoned.
In Lystra a man born lame was miraculously healed as Paul spoke. This got everyone's attention, but unfortunately they thought their gods had visited them in human form. They though Barnabas was Zeus and Paul was Hermes. The crowd wanted to offer sacrifices, and Paul and Barnabas had great difficulty convincing them they were ordinary men like them.
That's when a group of the Jews from Antioch and Iconium showed up. They further stirred up the crowd so that they took Paul and stoned him.
The mob actually thought he was dead and dragged him out of the city. A group of believers gathered around Paul who revived himself and they all went back into the city. The next day they left for Derbe.
Real Life Application -
I must not try anything in my own strength lest I give way to fear; instead I must rely fully upon the power of God's Spirit in everything.
Day's Prayer -
Human energy produced human results, but with the power of God's Spirit anything is possible! I thank you Lord that you have filled me with your Spirit. Help me to daily depend upon you for wisdom and strength. Only then will great things happen in and through me.

Bloody Mess
Whisper of God -
Lay your hand on the head of the Whole-Burnt-Offering so that it may be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for you. Slaughter the bull in God's presence. Aaron's sons, the priests, will make an offering of the blood by splashing it against all sides of the Altar that stands at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

Observation -
In Exodus God showed Moses how the altar was to be made. It was overlaid with bronze which like gold could be finely polished, but bronze would be far more durable than gold to withstand the fire that would burn on the altar.
In the opening three chapters of Leviticus God is now giving Moses instructions about various offerings that would be burnt upon the altar. The sins of the people would be paid for with the sacrifice of an animal; the blood made atonement for their sin. Yet the priest was to do something specific with the blood. The blood was to be splashed on all four sides of the altar.
The price of forgiveness could not be ignored. The beauty of the polished bronze was a sharp contrast to the bloody mess that would be continually splashed onto the altar.
Real Life Application -
I must not forget the bloody mess made on the altar of the cross through which the blood of Jesus paid the price for my sins.
Day's Prayer -
Jesus I don't want to be guilty of sanitizing the cross. We have turned it into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Help me to always see the contrast between the beauty and the blood. Thank you for the bloody mess you freely offered once and for all.

SOMETHING BIG
Whisper of God -
Peter went down and said to the men, "I think I'm the man you're looking for. What's up?"

Observation -
God was up to something BIG. He was about to include people from all nations in the plan of salvation. It was not a gift limited to only the Jews but was for everyone.
God prepared Peter, a Jew that grew up observing the law and was like other Jew prejudice. Yet God showed Peter that He did not make such distinctions in an unusual way. In a vision of animals Jews considered unclean, God told Peter to kill and eat. This happened three times.
When messengers from Cornelius' house arrived as Peter was trying to figure out the meaning of the vision it all became clear. So the next morning Peter, together with other Jewish yet Christian companions returned with these messengers to Cornelius.
After they arrived Peter shared the gospel with them. Then God did the unthinkable right before these Jewish believers eyes and ears. God baptized these non-Jew Gentiles with the Holy Spirit. Peter and his friends heard them all praising God and speaking in tongues just as they themselves had done at Pentecost.
Real Life Application -
God love people who are different from me, so I must not let prejudice prevent me from letting God do something big in their lives.
Day's Prayer -

Impatience
Whisper of God -
When the people realized that Moses was taking forever in coming down off the mountain, they rallied around Aaron and said, "Do something. Make gods for us who will lead us. That Moses, the man who got us out of Egypt—who knows what's happened to him?"
(Exodus 32:1 MsgB)
Observation -
Moses had gone up onto Mt. Sinai on behalf of the people of Israel. There God showed him the plans for the Tabernacle and much more. All this took time and the people became impatient waiting for Moses to return from the mountain. As a result they asks Aaron to make the a god to follow because they didn't know what had become of Moses. Aaron made a golden calf and the people worshiped and celebrated a false god even though they knew the commandments that God had spoken to them just a short time before.
Real Life Application -
As I face the uncertainties before me I sometimes fell like God is absent and become impatient looking for what I see is the answer.
Day's Prayer -
Lord forgive me for not trusting you completely. Help me to not rush ahead of your perfect timing by trying to figure things out on my own. Your ways are not my ways, therefore continue to give me ears to clearly hear the voice of your Holy Spirit. You will show the way and answer each prayer as I simply wait in hope on you.

I Only Have Eyes for You
Whisper of God -
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, hardly noticed—he only had eyes for God, whom he saw in all his glory with Jesus standing at his side.
(Acts 7:55 MsgB)
Observation -
Stephen had been chosen to serve as one of the deacons in the early church. He and the others were picked because they were all known to be full of the Holy Spirit.
We quickly find out just how much Stephen was filled with the Spirit as he is dragged out by and angry mob. The Spirit directs Stephen's words as he gives his defense. He recounts the history of the people of Israel and how God had worked among them. Yet the point of all this was to show how Israel had always rejected God. Whenever God would speak through one of the prophets the people would not listen. Instead they killed the prophets.
His words further outraged the mob. Rather than being convicted of their sin in their hearts, they did what their ancestors had done. The stoned Stephen to death.
As the stones began beating against Stephen his focus was not on the mob, their angry words or the pain he felt. Instead Stephen's focus was on God.
Real Life Application -
I am too easily distracted by trivial things. I need to be filled more and more with the Holy Spirit making so I too only have eyes for Jesus.
Day's Prayer -
Lord Jesus you know all the difficulties that challenge me. You know how easily I can become critical, how quickly I focus on the problem. Fill me with your Spirit afresh and anew today. May I only have eyes for you.

Buried Treasure
Whisper of God -
Next make tapestries of goat hair for a tent that will cover The Dwelling.

Observation -
God is giving Moses detailed instructions for the building of The Dwelling (better know to most of us as the Tabernacle). The Dwelling contained all the various things used to worship God - The Ark of the Covenant, the altar, the lamp stands, and more. Many of these things were covered with gold. The interior of The Dwelling was curtains of fine linen. But on the outside it was to be covered with goat skins.
From the outside The Dwelling looked no different than the many other tents in which the people lived. Yet within not only could earthly treasures be found, but more importantly God's presence would be there among His people.
I'm reminded of what Paul told the Corinthians. Like jars of clay we have a treasure within us of the limitless power of God (see 1 Corinthians 4:7). From the outside our appearance as believers is no different than anyone else. But on the inside is the life of Christ. We are The Dwelling of His Spirit!
Real Life Application -
The evidence of the treasure within is seen in how I live from day to day.
Day's Prayer -
Lord Jesus thank you for the treasure of Your Spirit that is living within in me. Empower me to not give in to the external pressures of life to fit in and be like everyone else. Empower me to talk differently, to act differently. May I daily live like You with an awareness of the treasure within.
